  • murmeln um schiffland (physical book and EP download)

Murmeln um Schiffland: the debut book/EP by murmeln (otherwise known as Ben Osborn, multi-instrumentalist and award-winning composer and writer).

This book of poems and drawings is released by Bristol’s Moot Press and comes with a five-track audio download of the EP released on Berlin’s WANDA Portal. The EP is produced by Berlin artist yr lovely dead moon and mastered by cult songwriter-producer Emperor X.

The EP and book is released 18th of April 2017 – Pesach VII, the final day of Passover. WANDA and Moot are releasing individual poems and tracks from the collection on each of the days of Passover (10-18th of April 2017).

“Murmeln’s vast history of composition has led him to a subtle sonic blend of electro-acoustic, classical and slacker folk. Haiku and Tanka guide the listener through a dreamlike landscape of modern day archetypes, between the lines and off the page” – WANDA.

“The text of Murmeln um Schiffland drifts tide-like between the connected poles of autobiography and dream-narrative, or back and forth along the route of passage between poem – lyric – song. In their playful fluency, the poetry and prose recall the anecdotal lyric of O’Hara’s Lunch Poems, with a handling of minimal form reminiscent of Snyder, Rexroth and late American engagements with Eastern poetics. Yet lurking within Murmeln um Schiffland, too, is a stonier, Rilkean sensibility open to ‘holy vision’, to the terrible and divine as they are revealed in the ecstatic of the modern city. Winter transfigures into spring and Berlin is afloat, the singer-poet ‘muttering at ship-country’.”
    – Moot Press

E-Book versions of the book, and CD-R versions of the tracks, are available on request.

i in white skies, the birds falling upward, the last stars battling morning iii deeper frequencies echoing across the wall in concrete heartbeats ii how happy I am I’m being a way to be away from home

this 2 03:59
these torn jeans tarmac-black replace the stars with more darkness I’m on my knees I’m crawling back tearing skin & drawing blood the morning knows it’s spring only humans sleeping in like rocks adorned with shipwrecks there are things I should have said these red eyes rubbed to tearlessness replace the sun & float above in this room it’s just the two of us but we could crowd a universe there are animals singing not awake for no reason nothing escapes its context & things I should be saying now that makes a torture of each breath & it’s poisonously laying low but this too shall pass & there will come some sunny day when you will smiling say ‘I got away at last!’

3-way kiss 03:59
I am a shadow in your holy vision shaking to the sound of dry-ice machines I have been reduced to pure repetition I am a dust mote that carries your sweat in the swirl of organic matter the pulse raps in machine gun meter surrounds you with coloured radiation outlines blur and shift with each sensation I taste you tasting my taste in her taste the new light filtered through the club windows painting an ancestor-mask on your face a vessel for some ancient magical rite You know invisible angels count the lies we tell in mundane conversation Like a snake I’m kissing air To sense my way Across the desert bare.

wi4out you 04:11
...without you even for a night or two I have no idea what to do I do things that I never do out of the blue I buy cigarettes & papers too when I’d usually steal a drag or two from you I guess I try to summon you in smoke shapes grey & blue the smell of the tobacco too brings me back to you like you were standing in this room waiting for the world to move without you I drink at least enough for two alcohol & coffee too I make an extra cup for you & when I do I take it with milk like you even if I don’t want to & then I have to see it through & nothing that I say sounds true each word autocued the sunbeams of the afternoon are obscured by you like you were standing in this room waiting for the world to move without you I find I’m crying as I read the news without you I take forever to put on my shoe without you I scan the sky for the hidden moon & find it’s blue without you.

I thought the trees on my street were the rigged masts of tall ships & the sounds of traffic passing were but waves breaking on the beach the falling earth believes the sun is rising the birds write coded words on the horizon I left my love a letter scrawled by driftwood in the sand & when the sea washed over I knew she would understand the sun that dips & all things change their colour the wind that blows the clouds into each other
